Game Review – “Ancient” game Counter!

Counter-Strike is a game, and we can call ancient one. In 1999 it appeared as a modification of the first-person shooter Half-Life for the first time. One year later, the game studio Valve bought the rights and developed it as an independent play. To date, Counter-Strike had been sold an estimated 30 million times. It is still considered one of the most popular multiplayer games and celebrates the inglorious leading role in just about every one of the so-called killers game debates. And that, although since 2004 appeared Counter-Strike: there are hardly any significant innovations. You might say that it is therefore slow time for a new version. One could also say that it does not need anymore updates but time will show us.

So much to begin with: There are no significant changes in CS: GO either. It is not a new game, but a major revision. The game principle remains unaffected: teams of terrorists and terrorist combatants face each other, depending on mission bombs, defuse or defuse hostages. Whoever dies must wait until the round is over. For successful actions, there is money that can be invested in weapons and equipment at the beginning of each round. What sounds simple, has been the charm of Counter-Strike for thirteen years. It is a game with little frills, a lot of dynamism and a long history.

Cautious changes

The developers of Valve and the cooperating studio Hidden Path know about these strengths. They also know how allergic the CS community reacts to change. A few years ago they tried to make the weapon system more dynamic by increasing or decreasing the prices of individual weapons on demand, but that idea failed.

No wonder, because CS gamers are addicted gamblers. They have been listening to the same jokes for years, for example, janna counter players always have same jokes like: “Press F10 for Money / Life / Wallhack” and the same insults (“Leg the bomb, Kackn00b!”). They play the same missions on the same servers against the same opponents. Always mindful of throwing a grenade into the door before entering and running with the knife in his hand, this is, of course, faster.

The developers obviously did not want to disturb this game biotope, which had thrived for years, by no means. For CS: GO they did not give the traditional team deathmatch a single new mission. Instead, they polished the classics. The environment is more lively, more colorful; some players may say unclear. However, apart from a few changes, it resembles the cards that existed ten years ago – packaged in a graphic that is better than its predecessors, but in 2012 no one will be left by the desk.

Further changes are in the details. Thus some weapons shine in new splendor; others are exchanged. There is a revised ranking list. The hit areas were also adjusted in comparison to CS: Source. And yet CS: Global Offensive after a short adaptation phase is similar to the predecessor. According to many players eight years ago, the update from CS 1.6 to CS: Source was only partly the case. Tom Bramwell of Spielportal Rock, Paper Shotgun writes: “Global offensive does not break anything, which does not have to be repaired anyway.” This is probably the most important news for all experienced players.
